AFLW breaking boundaries on and off the field
AFL Women's players have been breaking boundaries and kicking goals on and off the field.
Off the field it has been the players courage and openness that has opened the doors for a considerate discussion on sexuality in football.
Visibility is an important driver of cultural change, and so far players like Erin Phillips, Penny Cula-Reid, Mia Rae-Clifford, and Emma Swanson have lead way sharing their stories.
We hope their openness and the sharing of their stories will create a culture that encourages anyone, no matter their sexuality or gender identity, to pull on their boots and take their place on the footy field.
This article by Sarah Olle gives a great insight into how the visibility of out LGBTQI players in the AFLW gives the AFL the opportunity to open up the discussion on diversity. And truly show their commitment to diversity in their sport.
