Partnerships with some of Victoria's largest state and national sporting associations announced.

Proud 2 Play are thrilled to continue pursuing our vision of a world where all LGBTI+ people can lead healthy and active lifestyles, by formally announcing our partnership with some of Victoria’s largest state and national sporting associations.

In an innovative, collaborative approach, Proud 2 Play are working with Cricket Victoria, Tennis Victoria, Football Victoria and Athletics Australia to ensure inclusion for all LGBTI+ people in sport.

The work, funded through Sport and Recreation Victoria’s "Strengthening LGBTI+ Inclusion In Sport" project, is centred around providing members of the sporting community with education and support on LGBTI+ inclusion in sport, and assisting sporting organisations to implement more inclusive policies.

“Proud 2 Play are incredibly excited to be working with this group of leading sporting organisations to create a future where LGBTI+ people can participate in sport as their true selves without fear of discrimination or harassment” Proud 2 Play’s Partnerships Coordinator, Luke Major, said. “It is also encouraging to know that Sport and Recreation Victoria are committed to a more diverse and inclusive Australian sporting community.”

For some organisations, this is near the beginning of an exciting journey towards LGBTI+ inclusion in their sport. “This is something we have wanted to work on for a long time and are eager to see the positive impact we can have on participation in athletics” Athletics Australia’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Sean Dixon, said.

For others, this collaboration builds on pathways already created for LGBTI+ inclusion in sport. Cricket Victoria’s Community Engagement Specialist, Lachlan Harris, said “Having worked with Proud 2 Play for many years on delivering our annual Proud Cricket Program, this collaboration is an excellent opportunity to continue working towards creating a sport that is truly welcoming of people from all walks of life.”

At the 2018 Pride In Sport Awards, Cricket Victoria was recognised as Victoria’s highest ranked state sporting organisation in the Pride In Sport Index and Head of Diversity and Community, Emma Staples, was also awarded Ally of the Year. These achievements are in conjunction with new research commissioned by Cricket Victoria on LGBTI+ supporter groups in sport and the positive role they have in LGBTI+ people’s lives.

Proud 2 Play will be hosting a series of education sessions throughout May to educate employees of these organisations on LGBTI+ inclusion as well as on the ground sporting community members on dealing with discrimination on the sporting field. Proud 2 Play will also be hosting a Pride Space at the upcoming Australian Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park’s Athletics Centre to celebrate Athletics Australia’s commitment to LGBTI+ inclusion in their sport.
