The Victorian sporting community came together during the Midsumma festival this year. From the 120,000 attendees who passed through our Sports Precinct at the Midsumma Carnival, to the 50+ cohort who marched with us alongside local clubs at the annual Pride March.
The Proud 2 Play Sports precinct was a huge success, taking over the Alexandria Gardens on the 19thof January. The sun was out and so where the crowds, with over 120,000 in attendance it was a vibrant affair. A jam-packed agenda filled the day at the precinct. With drag performance by Leasa Mann and Tequila Mockingbird scattered in between competitions hosted by local clubs. Attendees were able to see the represented sports showcased on the Sports Precinct’s main stage, from tug o war, to wrestling demos and circus acts. One of the highlights of the afternoon being the crowd participation during the Latin American & Hispanic Rainbow Community dance lesson, with over 50 people learning some new moves. Some friendly competition was also demonstrated throughout the day with a Lip Sync Battle.
Attendees were also able to learn about some of the options available to them with Victoria’s array of LGBTI+ inclusive sports clubs and speak to members about how sport had benefited them.
From community members to representatives from members of our Rainbow Sports Alliance, the colourful flags and personalities were out in full force at this year’s Midsumma Pride March. The streets of St Kilda were lined with enthusiastic and vocal community members cheering us on as Proud 2 Play led the wave for the queer sports clubs. Proud 2 Play was joined by; cricket, tennis, athletics, netball, hockey and gymnastics and was a true showcase of the organisations endeavor to support the LGBTI+ community
Proud 2 Play would like to thank all clubs and organisations who got involved and made the day such a success, a lot of positive feedback was received, and the crowds spoke for themselves. We are already looking to make it bigger and better for next year!
