Impact Report

Learn more about what we've achieved over the last three years.

In a few short years, Proud 2 Play have helped shape the landscape of sports inclusion for LGBTI+ people in Victoria, and parts of Australia. We approach LGBTI+ inclusion in sport from all angles to provide grassroots organisations, clubs, state and national sporting organisations and other sporting associations with education, inclusive policy and procedure, inclusive events and improvements in LGBTI+ visibility in their sport. Through these approaches, we estimate to have supported over 1,000 LGBTI+ community members in sports inclusion.

Education is one of the most powerful tools for equipping people with the capacity to promote LGBTI+ inclusion in sport. Proud 2 Play have a long history of providing education around LGBTI+ inclusion to over 50 clubs, sporting associations, local governments and at physical education teacher groups. Topics covered in our education sessions include the basics around LGBTI+ inclusion, how to identify and respond to discrimination or harassment, and marketing and media strategies for handling LGBTI+ issues.

Group education delivered to employees and community members from leading state and national sporting organisations

Annual physical education teacher forum (supported by City of Stonnington and Inner East Local Learning and Employment Network)

E-learning course development for sports community members and school health and physical education teachers

Through inclusive policy review and development, Proud 2 Play are able to create positive change within sporting organisations from the top down. We have supported over 30 sporting organisations to make steps to review inclusion in their policies to better support the LGBTI+ community. A leadership team a standard for inclusion through inclusive policy has a flow on effect throughout organisations; it sends a powerful message to the LGBTI+ community that these are safe environments to be in, and it provides opportunities for participants, coaches and volunteers to learn about inclusive practices in an environment they know they will be supported.

Proud 2 Play are experienced facilitators of running inclusive sporting events, which provide pathways for LGBTI+ people to engage in new sporting environments. These inclusive events are ran as a combination of standalone events or more extensive programs that take place over a number of weeks. Running these events in conjunction with inclusion champion clubs provide a sustainable pathway to LGBTI+ sports participation where new participants will know they continue to be supported in those clubs long after these events are over.

There is a growing body of research documenting the state of LGBTI+ inclusion in sport in Australia and internationally, the benefits of participation and challenges organisations may be faced with when creating inclusive environments. We believe in the power of using evidence-based research to underpin our actions. We regularly conduct this research ourselves in conjunction with sporting organisations and universities. To find out more, visit our Research section.
